It is with great pleasure for UNDP to be part of the launch the first Integrated
Environmental Information Network in the State of Kuwait. This comes with the completion
of one chapter in the story of the fruitful cooperation between the Government of
Kuwait, UNDP and the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) which started
through the initiation of this project in 2003.
The World Summit on Information Technology held in November 2005 in Tunisia recognized
that sharing knowledge throughout the Arab States provides an excellent opportunity
for socioeconomic and environmental development. The State of Kuwait highlighted
the need to build the infrastructure for information & technologies through the
provision of effective methods to strengthen the inclusive access to information.
The Kuwait Integrated Environmental Information Network (KIEIN) is instrumental
to give the State of Kuwait a solid footing towards reaching the vision for the
development of an information society.

This state of the art technology covering marine, coastal, terrestrial and atmosphere
environments and expanding to socio-economic indicators will give the Government,
academia, civil society organizations and the public at large the platform for knowledge
based reforms and policies. This effort will bear fruit only if all stakeholders
understand that they are accountable to one another to promote the sustainable use
of resources while ensuring the durable social, environmental and economic development.
UNDP is proud to be part of this endeavor and we would like to thank all the institutions
and individuals who have contributed to the launch of this tool.
